This is the new lighthouse at Dungeness, opened in 1960

and still working today, its light can be seen far out to sea

helping boats and lives at sea.

The Old Lighthouse at Dungeness was opened by the Prince of

Wales on 31st March 1904. This Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1960 and replaced by a New Lighthouse, (still working today). The

Old Lighthouse is now open to the public as an attraction

(opened in 1983).

Dover Castle - The vast walls of the castle still dominate Kent's busiest port

Dover Castle: Guardian of the 'Gateway to England', this

giant of a castle displays a solid strength and determination

that has obviously carried it through many troubled times.

Proudly standing atop the White Cliffs, overlooking this busy

port, Dover has withstood the test of time remarkably well

throughout it's long and eventful history.

"Derek Jarman" a famous film director. This cottage sitting in

the middle of Dungeness is where Derek made his home

and created his Famous Nuclear Garden, the subject of many television gardening shows, with its plants that can stand all weathers and live on such a harsh landscape, also all of Dereks Driftwood Art forms are still in the Garden

Looking across Dungeness out to sea. The landscape of Dungeness is very different, many TV crews come and film

here, it must be seen to understand its spell on people.

* Smoking, or curing, is a centuries old way of preserving

food, but sadly, smoking fish is an art which is dying. Fortunately, for those wishing to buy quality produce,

prepared in the time old fashion, there still remain a very

few who with skill and dedication in the art.

    * There has been a "Smoke Hole", or "Herring Hang",

at The Smokery, on Dungeness Beach, for almost

200 years - since the fisherman who lived here used

it to preserve his catch.

    * Jim Moate has been smoking fish for some 30 years and

is a true expert. He learnt his art during his years as a

fisherman living and working at Dungeness, both from

talking to the older fishermen and from recipes found on

the old site at Pearl Cottage.

    * The Smokery was included in a series of TV programmes, Meridian Television's "Faces from the South" by Mike Field.

     * It is regularly visited by people from all over the country

and indeed the world, including Americans who have

heard about Jim either by word of mouth or from the

various articles written about him and his wares.
